Find links to websites offering practice with TCAP, ACT, SAT, and GED tests. There also links to general subject matter assessments for all grade levels. Although TeachersFirst does not typically review "hotlists," this collection is a well-organized way to find a quick-access review. Each topic includes links to several sites for practicing skills for that test, including several other links sorted by subject for review of content material. For example, under the Social Studies heading you will find grade level links as well as geography and state quizzes. Be aware: at the time of this review, about 95% of the links were working.

In the Classroom

Save this site in your favorites on classroom computers and use specific links as a center. Students can focus on areas of strength or weakness on a math game day or practice test taking by answering previously released test questions. Because this site offers multiple levels and activities for many topics, it is easy to differentiate for ability levels within your class. Include this site on your class web page for students and parents to access from home.

The CK-12 Flexbook Library holds ninety-two free, downloadable, and customizable textbooks. Topics are primarily mathematics and science: operations, physics, probability, biodiversity, organic chemistry, calculus, and many others. Other subjects include SAT preparation books, spelling, composition, and more. Navigate to the type of book you are looking for by scrolling over the edition. Read the brief description, and even view the table of contents. There are PDF printables, video clips, and much more! Many of the texts have both student and teacher editions. It may not be feasible to purchase new textbooks, but current ones are still needed. This free resource allows you to use fresh materials without spending a ton on new texts. Even better, if you do not like a book after using it in class, you can select a new one or combine pieces into your own "new" book.

LearnZillion is a video platform that combines video lessons, assessments, and progress reporting. Lessons highlight Common Core Standards in Math for grades 3 - 9. Each lesson is given in a video format, generally about 5 minutes per lesson. The lesson ends with a practice video. You are also presented with practice problems, and the answers are demonstrated and discussed. Teachers can sign up for a free account offering many special features of the site. Create customized playlists for students by dragging and dropping videos onto your playlist. Many lessons have a behind the scenes commentary just for teachers to watch before teaching a lesson to explain the rationale behind what is included. Featured materials can be downloaded for use in class. Short quizzes at the end of each lesson are scored and updated in student profiles, providing you with quick assessment information. Create individualized playlists for students to customize and differentiate instruction. Find lessons by using the Explore link on the site, choosing a general topic, then a more specific category. Each lesson includes the Common Core Standard addressed above the video lesson.

Math Pickle goes WAY beyond traditional math drill and skill games or math problem worksheets. There are mathematics videos for kindergarten through twelfth grade. The videos feature real students engaging in inspiring math problems and puzzles. The videos often speak to unsolved math problems throughout history. In the unsolved problem, you must use developmentally appropriate math to work out the problem. To begin, choose a grade level to search. Each video for that grade level has a short description of the task to be completed. Most videos are fairly short, from 3 to 10 minutes, and are accompanied by a PowerPoint and a Keynote presentation of the lesson. Many also include some additional worksheets or handouts. Read video explanations to find out whether they are intended for teacher or student viewing-- or both.

Discover irreverent, creative new projects featured every week in Evil Mad Scientist blog. This blog features applied science and math concepts in unique or unusual ways. A few of them push the envelope, but all will get you thinking. Every Wednesday, new projects tickle your imagination. Watch videos, read the latest stories, or comment on existing projects. Browse the shop,-- not to buy, but to see and analyze remarkable inventions. Join a mailing list to never miss new projects. Note: a few of the ideas involve hacking electronics and computers, so the site may be blocked by school filters. Preview to know for sure. See notes below on ways to share specific articles.

If you share a link with students, you may want to link to a specific post or use Readability (reviewed here) to provide a "clean view" of the post. Evaluate projects together on the IWB to help students identify characteristics of creativity and talk about how the ideas may have come to be. Use this site during a unit on scientific method so students connect the discipline of research with the creative results. What kind of experimenting took place? What principles of science? Compare the inventions available in the Shop with inventions from the Industrial Revolution. How is today a different environment for inventors (or is it?) Begin your own Evil Mad Scientist blog to feature your students' creativity or slightly irreverent ideas in a safe and school-appropriate environment, almost as an STEM graffiti wall.

Wired Math organizes a variety of math interactives, challenges, lessons, and enrichment opportunities from various sources to be used by students, teachers, tutors, and parents. The original site was created for middle grades, but some of the topics are useful at lower and higher levels. Math topics included range from fractions and simple multiplication to ratio, rate, and proportional relationships. The activities are simple to play and have a convenient help feature just in case you feel confused. Most of these activities require Shockwave.

If individual computers are available, allow students time to explore and log their progress against an individual math nemesis. This PBS site is a reorganized collection of over 16,000+ public media offerings (including radio and photographs), arranged specifically for preK-12 teachers. You can search by subject and grade level across many subjects. After viewing three offerings, you must join (for free) to continue. Membership includes the option of saving favorites. You can also find correlations to state standards. The site is still in development, so material is being added frequently.

This site is a non-profit website dedicated to answering the question, "When Will I Use Math?" The site describes the importance of mathematics and many career opportunities available to students who discover mathematics. Although there is a store and social links on the site, it is worth the visit for the information provided. The Careers link provides an extensive list of careers that use mathematics along with the approximate salary scale. Clicking the title of the career leads you to a biography of someone with this career, their education, math required and used in this career, potential employers, and other facts. Other interesting sections of the site include How To Succeed (tips for being successful with math) and Did You Know? (tidbits and trivia related to math). There is also a link for teachers with a link to a forum, other math resources, and information about math competitions. A blog on the site offers other math problems and information.
This site includes advertising.

Challenge students to create a list of jobs requiring mathematics and see how many they can find that are provided on the site. Ask students to estimate average salaries of jobs listed on the site and compare to actual salaries. At Take Your Child to Work Day time, have students use this site to explore the connections between math and the careers they visit. Share this site with students when studying careers.
