As the title implies, this site provides information and resources about financial literacy. It is organized along "life stages," beginning with teens and tweens and progressing through retirees. You can access information by selecting a life stage or by selecting a key word like "debt and credit" or "paying for education." Each section contains articles, Q&A exchanges, and other relevant resources.

tag(s): consumers (14), financial aid (9), financial literacy (31), money (137)

In the Classroom

A good site to recommend as a resource for students and families, this deserves a bookmark on your classroom list if you teach economics, personal finance, or consumer awareness. Guidance Counselors may want to recommend the resources organized under "paying for education." Student groups might use the site to research a particular topic or set of decisions, for example: "Should I get a credit card?" or "Should I borrow for college?" that could be presented to their peers or debated by opposing groups.

Create a simpler wiki using HackPad. Edit by clicking anywhere on the screen to make edits directly compared to a conventional wiki where you have to click to go into Edit mode to make any changes and save. Edits in HackPad are created in realtime which prevents the overwriting of information by others working at the same time. All changes are color coded with the author's name beside it. Currently, the absence of a revision history means that the page cannot be rolled back to previous edits versions. Type or paste in a link to videos (such as YouTube), and HackPad automatically embeds it into the page. Use the @ symbol to link to other pages easily or to add collaborators. (Logging in with a Google account makes this very easy.) Set privacy controls to public or private. The default is private. Learn more about wikis and compare with wiki tools in the TeachersFirst Wiki Walk-through.

tag(s): wikis (15)

In the Classroom

Use for collaborative note-taking in class with groups or students on multiple computers. Create pages for team and lab work or when students are working on a project. This tool is great for groups of students to collaborate and share. Use this as your classroom wiki: easy to use, edit, and follow.

Blobs is a logical thinking game where you have to 'leap-frog' blobs in the correct order to make them all disappear. Increase the level of difficulty from from 1 to 100 by sliding the bar at the bottom of the game board. Buttons let you reset the game, solve, get help, or generate a new game. Control volume with the slider bar on the game board. Warning: this game can be addictive!

Use as a class center for students to encourage problem solving skills and planning strategy for multiple steps. Encourage students to move through increasing levels in difficulty. Display on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to play together, having students share their strategies for game play while a student "emcee" operates the game. Have students keep track of their levels and number of moves. Have a student present his/her strategy, thinking out loud so others can see alternate approaches. Answerbag is a collaborative online database where questions are asked and answered by you. Search through questions using categories such as arts, education, science, and more. Responses are posted in order of ratings. Email registration is required to post and answer questions. An optional poll can be added to each question. Share questions using links to email share, Facebook, Twitter, and many other share tools. Warning: if you are using questions from their database, be aware, questions may update frequently so it is a good idea to take a look immediately before sharing in front of young people.

In the Classroom

Post a question as a homework assignment for student response using a specific url directly to that question. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create their own questions. Search for interesting questions already posted to use as a discussion/debate starter. You may want to preview the questions before using in the classroom as posts can sometimes contain language or content not appropriate for the classroom. Monitor use by using a whole class account to submit questions.

ShowMe is an open learning community where you can learn or teach any subject. Explore topics such as math, science, world languages, social studies, art, and more. Explore the links on the home page or search for a topic with the search bar at the top of the page. Results are divided into subtopics and can be sorted by featured, popular, or recent videos. High school teachers may be especially interested in the ShowMe SAT offerings available through a link at the bottom of each page. Creating a ShowMe of your own requires a download of the app from the iTunes store (and an iPad). The download is free. If you are worried about students seeing questionable material, you may want to provide the link directly to the video you wish students to view. At the time of this review, all material appeared appropriate. Although it is not available yet, Showme hopes to offer an Android version of the app, as well.

tag(s): test prep (53), tutorials (42), video (66)

In the Classroom

Share the site (or individual videos) with your students to access at home for homework help using the Facebook, Twitter, email, or embed link on each video. List the ShowMe link on your class website. View tutorials on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) as a whole class. Encourage students to share links to specific videos they find helpful on a "Video Reviews" page of your class wiki. For a very real challenge, have students create their own simple review videos using the ShowMe app on iPads (if available) then embed them on your class wiki for a year-to-year student-made study guide! For examples of sophisticated topics simplified in whiteboard stick figure videos, see Common Craft, reviewed here.

Vokle allows you and others to connect through an interactive video conference format. There are three main components to the program: text chat, audio, and video. Registration is required to host an "event" but isn't necessary for viewing recorded events available on the site. After registering, create an event (or series) by providing a title, description, and category. Schedule an event for a future time or go live immediately. Invite others to the event by embedding the code on your website, Facebook page, Twitter link, or by sharing the url. Encourage participation through viewer comments and questions that can be screened and chosen by the host. Sessions are recorded and can be viewed at a later time making this very useful for the classroom. Search for sessions by browsing events and viewing available categories. The learning category may be a useful starting point.

tag(s): chat (22), video (66)

In the Classroom

This site would be perfect to use when collaborating with other classrooms, for holding an author visit, or for professional collaboration. After hosting an event, share the link with students (or parents) who could not attend or who want to watch it over again. Encourage students to host their own event with topics such as book talks, interactive discussions on solving difficult math problems, or discussions of current events. Create a Vokle for parents to view, sharing your educational philosophy, classroom procedures and expectations, and other school-related information. Create a Vokle for students who were absent from class or who may want to watch the lesson again. Even elementary classes can make a vokle under teacher supervision for special events such as Earth Day or the 100th day of school.

Find links to websites offering practice with TCAP, ACT, SAT, and GED tests. There also links to general subject matter assessments for all grade levels. Although TeachersFirst does not typically review "hotlists," this collection is a well-organized way to find a quick-access review. Each topic includes links to several sites for practicing skills for that test, including several other links sorted by subject for review of content material. For example, under the Social Studies heading you will find grade level links as well as geography and state quizzes. Be aware: at the time of this review, about 95% of the links were working.

Create and design your very own robot. Choose different features to add from options on the site: heads, legs, arms, body, and objects. Drag the objects to where you want them. You can stretch, rotate, and color each piece. For examples and ideas, a gallery of the last 50 robots created and submitted is available for viewing. You can submit your robot to the site. An email address is required. You can also email it to yourself so you can keep the url. Or simply take a screen shot to save the robot (Shift+command+4 on a Mac or PrntScrn key to COPY the image on Windows.) PASTE the screenshot into a document or slide.

In the Classroom

Demonstrate how to use the site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Allow students to explore and experiment on their own. This site would be great for teaching adjectives. Have the class create robots then write descriptions. Then have the class try to match each robot to the written descriptions. Use the created robots as a story starter for creative writing assignments.

Practice finding shapes based on a given description with this geometry challenge. Listen to the directions, then click on the shape described. If correct, the shape changes color; an incorrect guess prompts you to try again. Two different activities are included. When complete, a message tells how much time you took to complete both tasks and your accuracy rate.

In the Classroom

Use this site on classroom computers as a math center. Challenge students to record completion time and accuracy percentage each time played in an effort to improve each time. Display the site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) when teaching basic geometric shapes. After the description is given ask students to name the shape given. Take advantage of incorrect student responses to compare and contrast shapes. Share this link on your class website for students to practice both in and out of the classroom.
