Surface Languages is free site to learn basic survival words and phrases on a variety of topics in 37 different languages. Learn phrases in Afrikaans, Slovak, Arabic, Spanish, Bosnian, Swahili, Bulgarian, Swedish, Catalan, Turkish, Chinese, Ukrainian, Croatian, Urdu, Czech, Welsh, Danish, Yiddish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Russian. Phrases are organized into topics so use is simple. In addition to reading and hearing the words and phrases pronounced, the site has the capability of creating flash cards for each lesson. You choose yes or no to indicate if the card has the correct meaning. It also offers multiple choice items to test listening skills for the language and translating from English to the target language.

This site would be very handy in introduction (and level 1) world language classes. Use this site as a learning station or center. Use this site as a reference for checking meanings of foreign words and phrases. Use this site when students are preparing a project about another culture. If you have students in world language, world culture, or even language arts classes who need enrichment - send them to this site to learn the basics of a new language or look for roots that show in English. self-motivated gifted students or those planning a semester abroad can learn language basics on their own here. Download a free song each month including the audio file, sheet music, MP3 recording, and accompanying activities from Children's Music by Nancy. Also available on the site are monthly archives since 2006. Many songs include links to similar songs available on the site. Search by categories such as Science, Language, Holidays or alphabetically. Simple instructions for downloading resources are included on the site along with directions for making your own CD with the songs.
In the Classroom
Use content area songs on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) and speakers to introduce new units. For example, when beginning a unit on the Solar System, play "In Our Solar System (Bye Bye Pluto)" to introduce students to the planets' names. Share the site with your school's music teacher as a way to extend activities between subjects. Help students learn Spanish or French by learning songs from the site together. Be sure to share this link with parents. They may want to put some of the songs on the family MP3 player to enjoy on car trips.

World of Tales collects folk and fairy tales from various sources into this site. Many are tales long past copyright and therefore available for use without copyright concerns. There are also links to animated or audio folk tale versions. Some of the animations are from YouTube so may be blocked by school filters. Search tales by geographic origin, theme, author, book, and more. You can also change the "theme" of the page display to make it easier to see on a projector. There are advertisements that clutter the page and slow it down a bit, but having such a searchable collection is very handy.

In the Classroom
Declutter the display of a specific tale by using the Readability plugin (reviewed here) on your computer or copy/paste the text into a clear page to share on a projector interactive whiteboard. Have students highlight their favorite passages or examples of characterization. Have students create story maps of these classic tales or produce their own "skit" versions to record on video and share on TeacherTube (reviewed here) or SchoolTube (reviewed here). Make this resource available on your teacher public page for students to select and read their stories of choice during a unit on folktales/fairy tales. World language classes can read these English language versions of tales from land/language they are studying and write dialog between characters in their new language. This kids' branch of Learn English (created in the UK) contains interactives, short stories, crafts, songs, and even an opportunity for students to help their younger brothers and sisters learn English. A free log-in allows you access to printed versions of the stories (with questions), the ability to make comments, enter competitions, answer polls, and even create a "character." Another log in for teachers and parents opens up suggestions for teaching and using the resources of the site. Professionals can also find video tips and access to helpful articles. Access to the site is available in other languages such as Chinese and French, all aimed at teaching English. A text help feature using "BrowseAloud" opens up the English learning to students with vision or reading challenges. Note that vocabulary used is British, so you may need to explain a few words to US or Canadian students, e.g. "rubbish bin."

Primary grade and preK teachers will find many useful interactives for basic skills like colors and phonics on this site, even though it is intended for learning English. Share the activities as a center or for extra practice for struggling students. Check with your administration about whether students can register individually for the site. Introduce this site to your class on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Make a shortcut to this site on classroom computers and have your ELL/ESL students use it as one of your learning stations. Short stories and other interactive features of the site would work well with special education students, too. Be sure to share this link with parents of your ELL students if they have Internet access at home.

This amazing site contains thousands of lesson plans and activities for students of all ages (ages 3-16+). Simple registration is required with an email address and password. Choose a grade range to search for activities. Note that terminology for lessons is from the UK, so you may need to "translate" for U.S. curriculum topics and spelling. Choose subjects then further categorized into topics. Many links include complete lessons plans with items such as PowerPoint lessons, videos, quizzes, worksheets, and much more. Other options on the site allows you to save items as favorites, follow other users, save searches, and upload materials. Another offering is the "Whole School" category that includes resources for school needs such as behavior and assemblies.

This section of the larger Childtopia website offers seven classic tales in interactive, audio book format: The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, The Tin Soldier, The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks, and Little Red Riding Hood. These audio stories are available in English, Spanish, French, Catalan, and Basque. The text appears on book pages, and you simply flip the bottom edge of the page to move forward and back. Although the advertisements at this site are a bit distracting, this collection is still worthwhile.

In the Classroom
Share these stories as an interactive whiteboard or computer "center" for students of all ages to listen and enjoy. With emergent readers, mute the volume, and read the story as a class or in small groups. In world language classes, have students read the tales in their "new" language. Have students act out the tales. Challenge students to create their own comics to retell a classic tale using one of TeachersFirst's many comic/cartoon tools here.

Word Hippo is a word study tool for synonyms, antonyms, and more. Look for rhyming words, opposites, translations to a variety of languages, plurals, definitions and uses for the word, etc. The site also makes suggestions for other words in case you might have made a typo or do not know the spelling. As with any other reference, students should be cautioned to be sure these are accurate definitions needed for the context in which they are studying the words. You will want to spell out consequences and/or supervise to be sure students are not searching for inappropriate words, but the most egregious words of bad taste do not appear to be available for search at this site.

Use this site for word study assignments, such as writing sentences, paragraphs, or essays using new words. Since the site permits translation, this would be a valuable tool in world language classes, ESL/ELL classes, and more. Introduce this site on an interactive whiteboard and elicit examples to show the class how quickly it works. Have students create their own word walls with synonyms, antonyms, sentences, and more for their latest vocabulary words. Try a tool such as Wallwisher (reviewed here) for each student to create an online "wall" with words aligned to color coded stickies for synonyms. antonyms, etc. Alternatively, have students create class challenges for their peers with color coded matching activities for the IWB matching words to synonyms, antonyms, and an appropriate fill in the blank sentence. Share this as a favorite on your teacher public page for handy reference any time students encounter an unknown word. You can share as little or as much information as you choose to in your profile. To begin, simply choose a native language for your language partner as well as the language you would like to use to communicate in! There is the option to choose more than one chat partner as well. With an authentic language partner from another culture the opportunity to learn about culture, idiomatic language, things of interest to young people, etc. is a terrific bonus for you. We strongly recommend parent permission, as well. To use this tool, create an account and start playing with the features. There are also tutorials and showcases featured on the site to show what can be done. This would be great for creating time lines in social studies class, showing different places and teaching geography and social studies together. Foreign language students could create maps explaining culture aspects of the language or trace the origins of language. Assign students in math or family consumer sciences to be travel agents and plan vacations, including the costs of the trip.As part of a book project, have your students show the setting of a novel they are reading, with images that annotate their impression of what the setting looks like. Have students create visual current events, especially for events that take place over time, such as the primaries and Presidential Elections.

This site, created by a French-speaking professor, offers interactive "books" on grammar topics for English learners. Open the pages and find plenty of exercises on the selected topic, including grammar. Topics include the verb "to be," past tense, present continuous tense, using "can," using "must/mustn't," a variety of holidays, clothing, houses, daily routine, places in town, pronouns, etc. The only drawback is that the opening page that lists the topics is in French, but if you look at the menu on the left, all topics are in English. After finding a topic, you can see the "Table of Contents" for the book listing all the interactive exercises which include audio.

You may want to first share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector, so students understand how to navigate the site. It is worth searching this site to find the review exercises you would like your ESL/ELL students to brush up on. Include the site on a classroom computer list so the students can also work ahead and become familiar enough with it to use it at home. The exercises are good enough that native English speakers with trouble spots or special education students would also find it useful.

Sqworl is a site for combining multiple links into one single link. Registration is required; however, it is very easy. You create a username and password, add your email and it is done. After registering, a personal homepage is created, this is where the magic can begin! The homepage is where groups will be created to combine url's. Then adding some groups of link begins the process of creating groups. At this point a title is given to the group being created (examples might be Math sites, American History, etc.). The final step is to add a short description. After choosing start, simply copy and paste the url you want to use and add a short description and click finish. Once a group is created, it can be shared through the url shown on the page. Sqworl also has a bookmarklet that can be added to the browser toolbar making it easier to add items to your groups without having to open the homepage. There is also a mobile app for iPhone.

ThatQuiz is an online assessment tool for teachers of all subjects and grade levels. Create an account to gain access to record keeping tools. You can make your own tests using questions within the site. Students do not need to register since additional features are only for teachers. After choosing a category, different options are available within each of the quizzes to increase difficulty and add features. Quizzes can be timed or completed at the students' own pace. There is also an option to create a url for an individual quiz that can be linked to Facebook or Twitter accounts.

In the Classroom
Assign quizzes to students to complete on classroom computers or in computer labs. Modify activities for different student levels. Create a teacher account and modify quizzes to meet your own needs. Challenge students to complete quizzes and then increase the difficulty level. Share this link on your classroom website for students to access (to practice skills) while both in and out of the classroom. Consider allowing students to create quizzes for each other using a class account during review times or in small groups. It is much more fun to "study" by creating a quiz!

This site uses movie and music video clips to teach English vocabulary and listening. It also has visual dictionaries called "Photo Vocabs" and other learning interactives based on active media experiences. There is also a large component that includes social networking around the world. To receive full access to all offerings, you need to register to activate a "booster pass." There is also a Premium level, activated only after registration and payment. Everyday there is a new video booster (video clip) and accompanying vocabulary activities. Video clips are taken from things that interest teens. Students can select a "translation" language for the question vocabulary to be instantly translated on mouse-over. Students can also create an identity online, a "badge." Be certain to monitor the daily offerings and preview to make sure they are appropriate for your classroom.

Add text and more to your uploaded or online photos with Bubblesnaps. Upload your images to the Bubblesnaps server to begin creating your own bubblesnaps. Add text bubbles anywhere on your picture. Add a description, a caption, or other kinds of text into your picture with Bubblesnaps. Bubblesnaps also allows you to increase or decrease the size of the text bubbles. You can add your Bubblesnaps to your website, blog, or email. Recipients can reply to your email with the same photo and use Bubblesnaps as well. Free registration is required to save images when finished. At the time of this review you can save a maximum of 12-18 Bubblesnaps. Be sure to check out the link "New Features" for some neat ideas and updates from the creators.

Sit back and enjoy an exquisite escape into the beautiful world of Claude Monet's paintings. The RMN-Grand Palais, and Musee d'Orsay transformed their 2010 exhibition, "Claude Monet 1840- 1926," into a virtual gallery space that transcends time and space. You have the opportunity to examine over 100 digital paintings. The zoom-in feature provides a unique opportunity to observe the brushstrokes closer than any security guard would ever allow! The graphics, animations and interactive features are outstanding. You will enjoy reading interesting tidbits of information about each individual painting, and exploring Monet's timeline available in the gallery. There is also an interactive journey that accesses your web cam and asks you to spill an inkwell, blow poppy petals into the wind, change the seasons of a painting and spook a bird into flight. The Exhibition Monet is an innovative and incredibly beautiful virtual gallery experience. Please be patient: this site loads a bit slow at peak times of the day. But it is WELL worth the wait.

In the Classroom
This site will bring the world of art history alive for students. Project and share the site on an interactive whiteboard or projector, and then break students into small groups to explore independently. Consider using this site before starting a unit on Impressionism or visiting a local art museum. History teachers might want to ask students to find examples of how industrialization may of effected Claude Monet's paintings. Use this site in science to show how light interacts and effects our environment (and of course, take an observational detour into the world of impressionism.) Consider asking students how scientific discoveries about color and light in the late 1800's affected this group of painters. Create a resource link on the school webpage to this site so that families can enjoy exploring Monet's paintings together at home.

This site features a video collection for second language learners. It allows you to select short videos on a wide variety of subjects for classroom use. There are also pre-written quizzes -- or you can prepare your own quiz about the video. Students can view, test, and receive the results of their quizzes from any computer; results appear immediately. Videos and quizzes are available at four levels. The same type of offering can be used in French, Spanish, German, and other languages. You can simply set up a class group and students can use a log in to access the videos and quizzes. You can also add your own video selections and quizzes to the site. The parameters ask that videos be rated up to PG-13 only. Registration is free. You can make comments on the videos and quizzes. Other offerings of the site include transcripts of the videos and culture notes with relevant information, as well as grammar, vocabulary, slang, and pronunciation help.

In the Classroom
Assign these videos and quizzes to ESL/ELL students and world language students to help improve their listening comprehension and vocabulary in a fun way! This activity would work well for individual or pairs of students in a lab or on laptops. Check with your administrators to be sure they allow students to make comments on such sites. Registration requires an email. If you choose to have students register individually, read tips for safely managing email registrations here. Encourage students to find appropriate videos their teachers can share; students could get wonderful listening and writing practice by preparing their own quizzes. Teachers can then submit them if approved.
