Rich Chart Live is an online chart creator that instantly creates Flash charts (and other formats) that can be easily shared. Choose a template from the many options. Begin adding data, style choices, color options, and layout. An animation option is available to apply to the chart's axes and elements and can be customized with speed options. When finished, click Publish. Charts can be opened in a new page, saved to a PowerPoint, or embedded into a blog via copy and paste. You can also "drag and drop" the link to the char onto your desktop (and thus get its url). Opening the link in "free mode" asks for an email address first, but even abc@123.com works.

Watch charts change by using different inputs and customization options. Challenge students to predict and draw what charts will look like before changes are applied. Use the site to compare and contrast different ways to present information and discuss styles that work best in different situations. Watch and listen as popular authors talk about their nonfiction books on this C-SPAN companion website. Book TV features 48 continuous hours of nonfiction books every weekend. You can easily explore the archived programs, video library, or books and topics by searching the title, author, category, keyword, or browsing all of the listings. Watch the online videos or listen to podcasts of interviews with the authors from Book TV's After Words. There is a lot here to explore, and it appears to be ever-growing! You can find past telecast videos on YouTube, as well, in case you want to be able to download them to use offline. Click the YouTube menu. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable. You could always view the videos at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as Zamzar reviewed here to download the videos from YouTube.

Videos can be found in several ways: via a keyword search bar near the top of the home page for doing a keyword search, via search by categories, or via browsing the latest videos. Clicking on a link will show the video embedded on the site. Some videos include teaching notes and links to other videos in the same category. If your school blocks YouTube you may have problems accessing the videos as they are hosted by YouTube.

In the beginning, the TEDTalks mission was to bring together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. However, its scope has broadened to challenge the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers to give the talk of their lives (in approximately 18 minutes or less). At the time of this review, TED.com has more than 1,100 of the best talks and performances by speakers with powerful ideas from around the world. The talks are free and the collection continues to grow. If you are looking for a clearinghouse that offers free inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, this ever-evolving site is perfect for engaging your students with digital videos of the global issues facing our world today. Use your projector or interactive whiteboard to project videos. Watch your students' enthusiastic reactions in science, social studies, or English classrooms as they view a TED video and then follow-up with a debate on the future or the impact of technology on society, or use them as a springboard for interesting writing prompts or to spark a discussion connected with a unit of study. Challenge students to do a compare/contrast activity using an online Venn Diagram tool (reviewed here). Most of the videos are less than twenty minutes, which makes it real doable to embed in a one-period class lesson.

Ready to think big? How about an interactive timeline that covers all of time from the Big Bang to today? Chronozoom is an ambitious project, just launched (at the time of this review), that seeks to create zoomable, interactive timelines for the entire history of time. At present, the site is still under construction, but it is visually stunning and a little overwhelming. You will need to set aside some time to watch the video tour and to tinker with the site before presenting it to students. Every move of the mouse, every click, seems to create "explosions" of graphs and timelines; you'll need to be patient and get the hang of navigation.
The site's creators freely admit that they don't really know where the project will lead, and what technologies might emerge that will help them create more content for the site. There are some caveats for using the site. First, the site assumes a particular theory of the creation of the universe, and the timeline of its existence. Second, the site can lend itself to aimless "mousing," or the temptation to simply click and move the mouse to see how the site will react, with no attention to the content at all.

This is a big idea, still in its early stages. Obviously it has usefulness as a way of visually demonstrating the sheer immensity of time, and the relative insignificance of human existence in comparison. You could use this site as an intro to any history or geology class simply to generate BIG questions that students want to know. Consider asking gifted students, or students interested in technology applications to imagine what the site COULD be. How would they create a visual overview of--forever? How can one prioritize what matters? But on an interactive whiteboard--WOW! The CK-12 Flexbook Library holds ninety-two free, downloadable, and customizable textbooks. Topics are primarily mathematics and science: operations, physics, probability, biodiversity, organic chemistry, calculus, and many others. Other subjects include SAT preparation books, spelling, composition, and more. Navigate to the type of book you are looking for by scrolling over the edition. Read the brief description, and even view the table of contents. There are PDF printables, video clips, and much more! Many of the texts have both student and teacher editions. It may not be feasible to purchase new textbooks, but current ones are still needed. This free resource allows you to use fresh materials without spending a ton on new texts. Even better, if you do not like a book after using it in class, you can select a new one or combine pieces into your own "new" book.

Take a look at this great science site with animations about a variety of topics. Find new interactive modules in the "Latest New" section of the website. Choose an age range to find age-appropriate information and/or simulations. Roll your mouse over the results to see more information about each activity. Be sure to check out the animation about heat and insulation to really understand kinetic theory and movement of heat. The Energy and the Environment module is a great way to understand current and future sources of energy for our needs.

Jefferson Lab is a tremendous resource for science. It has loads of resources for classroom use, divided by the type of activity. Hands-on activities include the lab's BEAM program for 6th-8th grade. There are descriptions of each activity along with a PDF of the lesson, handouts, and worksheets. Most activities also offer an online version. Worksheets, puzzles, and other interactives include items such as vocabulary lists, word searches, and crossword puzzles. Each activity includes a short description and explanation of how to play. Many activities have links to other, similar games. Another portion of the site has videos of science experiments such as shattering pennies and flying rings. Videos are generally under 5 minutes and would work well in most classroom settings. You can subscribe to the lab's YouTube channel and be notified when there are new videos to view.

Show videos from the site as an introduction to new units such as studying static electricity. Share this site with students and allow them to explore online activities on their own. BUild excitement for STEM related careers by having students explore and report their favorite discoveries. Have students complete an online activity then create a talking avatar using a photo or other image (legally permitted to be reproduced). Their avatars can explain science concepts demonstrated in the activity. Use a site such as Blabberize (reviewed here) for talking avatars.

Click on each topic for more information. For example, Choosing Energy shows latest news related to energy alone. Use the spectacular images as writing prompts or to encourage discussions. Find incredible photographic lists to use as a writing prompt and for further research. Research more information under the Learn more section. Use the information for research, understanding issues involved with the environment, for questioning the natural world, and to encourage action. Reading specialists can find informational reading passages to use for practice with reading comprehension. Clear out clutter on the page with the article using the Readability tool, reviewed here. Then share the article on interactive whiteboard for students to use the pens to annotate main idea, etc. In science class, have students read an article of choice and create a public service announcement type assignment. Consider using Tildee, reviewed here. With Tildee students can use text, screen shots, and video to develop their public service announcement. Be sure to provide a link of this site on your website or a classroom computer for easy access.

Zacbrowser is a free, downloadable and customizable browser specifically designed to help students with autism, autism spectrum disorder, and other special needs so they have usable access to the Internet. At this time, ZacBrowser is WIndows ONLY. The browser simplifies and controls what you can reach when you click on items on the screens. Many testimonials of families with children with special needs affirm the browser's usability for children who may be confused, distracted, overwhelmed, or frustrated by normal web browsers.
In the Classroom
Ask your tech department to Install this on your classroom computer if you have students with special needs such as autism. Provide this link to parents who may benefit from the browser. Note that this download is Windows only at this time.
This resource requires Adobe Flash and PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

This amazing site contains thousands of lesson plans and activities for students of all ages (ages 3-16+). Simple registration is required with an email address and password. Choose a grade range to search for activities. Note that terminology for lessons is from the UK, so you may need to "translate" for U.S. curriculum topics and spelling. Choose subjects then further categorized into topics. Many links include complete lessons plans with items such as PowerPoint lessons, videos, quizzes, worksheets, and much more. Other options on the site allows you to save items as favorites, follow other users, save searches, and upload materials. Another offering is the "Whole School" category that includes resources for school needs such as behavior and assemblies.

Browse the shop,-- not to buy, but to see and analyze remarkable inventions. Join a mailing list to never miss new projects. Inspire creativity and original thinking with Evil Mad Scientist. Use as inspiration or examples for student projects in art, science, or music, research, or applied creativity. If you share a link with students, you may want to link to a specific post or use Readability (reviewed here) to provide a "clean view" of the post. Evaluate projects together on the IWB to help students identify characteristics of creativity and talk about how the ideas may have come to be. Use this site during a unit on scientific method so students connect the discipline of research with the creative results. What kind of experimenting took place? What principles of science? Compare the inventions available in the Shop with inventions from the Industrial Revolution. How is today a different environment for inventors (or is it?) Imagine a site that allows you to discover and share websites, find and create custom quizzes, create a class website, track student comprehension, and save, share, and reuse content. You will find all of these features and more at this site for teachers preK- grade 8 (still in beta). At the time of this review, the entire site was free - so no need to worry about what is included in a basic vs premium membership. After creating a free account, go to your dashboard to add new content on your 19Pencils site through searches and favorites. There is a special section called My Class Page that students will see when going to your site. This includes items you have chosen as favorites and class quizzes. To share this content on your current website or blog, there is a widget code to copy and paste. 19Pencils also has a blog, Facebook page, and Twitter feeds to follow. The site has some short videos to help you become comfortable with its many features.

This new "freebie" from Brainpop goes beyond the usual videos and quizzes. It includes several engaging interactives, some created by Brainpop and others linked to outside sources. Game Up, a free area of Brain Pop, is a collection of free online games that are linked to Common Core and State Standards. Science, math, social studies, and health activities provide challenge for every learner. This free gem also includes activities for grades K-3 and ESL/ELL students. Some of the topics (at the time of this review) included: Drake Equation, Court Quest, Cell Command, Blood Typing, Make Me Sick, The Diabetic Dog Game, and Food Fight.
