This simple site offers five challenging labeling activities: layers of the Earth, structure of a flower, anatomy of a fish, the respiratory system, and layers of the atmosphere. Each activity shows the students the labeled item (fish, flower, etc..) for a short period of time, to preview. Then the labels are taken away, and student must click and drag the correct labels to the correct boxes on the diagram. The labels will only "drop" into the correct blank. Activities are also available in Spanish. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

tag(s): atmosphere (15), earth (194), fish (19)

In the Classroom

There are five possible topics to explore at this site: if you are learning about the layers of the earth, plants, fish, respiratory system, or the atmosphere, use this site to review the terms learned during your unit. This site could also be used as an introduction to a new unit. During science class, have students explore this site on individual computers. Allow students to choose which topic they wish to "label." Don't forget the headsets.

This interactive walk through 65 million years of history reveals just how very much things have changed during Earth's geologic lifetime. Beginning with the death of the dinosaurs, students can explore seven major geologic periods as a continual timeline or in segments. Interactive maps allow users to experience the continental shuffle, the many geologic changes that affected our earth, and the evolution of life forms.

In the Classroom

There are TONS of interactive games and activities on this site that could easily be utilized in the classroom. Search through the site to find one that is fitting for your class, and save it as a favorite on classroom computers to be used as a learning center or station. Teachers could even introduce the activity on the interactive whiteboard first to give students a better idea of what they will be doing and how this corresponds to the unit. Almost all would be great for a review.

Weather's impact on the course of history sometimes goes unnoticed. A heat wave brings about public policy change; a hurricane alerts the public to the need for better planning and an improved safety net; a father of our country dies due to extreme weather. This collection of full episodes and a few with shorter "preview" clips from the Weather Channel's regular series is ideal for use in the classroom to help students make connections between climate, geography, and history. The collection includes more obvious events such as Hurricane Katrina as well as numerous others: heat waves, George Washington, the Hindenburg, American colonial times, Nagasaki, D-Day, the Dust Bowl, smog, the Titanic, the Nome Serum Run and the green movement in the wake of tornado devastation. The video makes the events more real while the narration places then in context.

tag(s): climate (85), disasters (28), weather (156)

In the Classroom

Share one or more clips (selected from a full episode) on a projector or interactive whiteboard as part of your study of a time period in history or assign students to research different events, asking them to answer big questions such as, "What role does climate play in a community's growth and government?" or "What might have happened if the weather had been different on this day?" Have students write a blog post as an eyewitness to the events or create a class wiki on the impact of geography, climate, and other "earthly" factors on the decisions that humans make. Create one wiki page per event and assign small groups to write the pages as newspaper articles at the time and another page using historical perspective. Don't forget to add mock news pages about what might have happened if the weather had been different! Not comfortable with wikis? Have no wiki worries - check out TeachersFirst's Wiki Walk-Through. The same assignment could also be done on video as a series of podcast "news" stories. Use a site such as PodOmatic (reviewed here).

Use these videos as part of your science study of weather so students relate the hard data to human events. Have students use a multi-angle approach using both scientific data and human data about the event to create a weather wiki or multimedia project such as mock interviews at the time of the event and ten years later.

Working with NOAA, the University of Nebraska at Lincoln has created one of the best looking drought monitoring sites we've seen. There are maps showing drought severity, crop data, rainfall, and related topics over a wide variety of time series, and the quality of the graphics is well beyond that of most similar sites. If your students are studying weather - or just complaining about the summer heat - this site can shed some light on the problem.

tag(s): earth (194), earth day (104), environment (262), resources (90)

In the Classroom

The most difficult aspect in learning about the environment is understanding how the "stuff we use" impacts more than students can imagine. Use this thought-provoking movie to stimulate class discussions, get students thinking, and create awareness. Students can take aspects of the video and do group research of additional information needed to understand. Students can also create awareness campaigns, poll friends and families, blog, or create other multimedia articles. Looking for some creative multimedia options? How about having students create public service message podcasts ("Stop! Where do you think that ___ came from?") using a tool such as PodOMatic (reviewed here). Or create videos and share them using Teachers.tv (reviewed here).

Students can research the origins of many popular items in their lives, tracing the materials used and the resources needed to create and transport the materials and the product. Students can create a Google map or Mapskip (reviewed here) showing the movement of materials throughout the world from resource to send product to consumer.

The Library of Congress offers this searchable database of historical maps, which includes a large collection of city maps, maps of military battles and campaigns, maps related to transportation and communication, and maps focused on exploration and discovery. Within each category, you can search geographically or by time period. Each map accessed can be navigated using a zoom feature for better viewing. Maps cover a wide range of national and international subjects.

tag(s): battles (11), environment (262), maps (186), transportation (27)

In the Classroom

Teachers with interactive whiteboards or projectors will find these maps a natural companion to lessons involving history, geography, and cultural changes. Sometimes seeing a map drawn at the same time as the event under discussion can lend a whole new understanding of the culture of the people being studied. It's far more dramatic to imagine sailing into the unknown on a voyage of discovery while you look at the only maps available to those aboard.

Be sure to have students use the whiteboard tools to draw in their own "corrections" or annotations showing the movement of people or strategies used in battles. Since thee resources are in the public domain, you are allowed to copy them into your whiteboard software and keep the student annotations atop the maps, as well. The maps also make good visuals for "mock" blog entries by historical figures!

For example, under "Mammals," choose "Build a Digestive System" or "Evolution of Appendages" to learn more about how animals are adapted to live in their environment. Other interactives include "Bird Yard" that challenges learners to develop a habitat for birds and "Tracks" for learning to calculate the speed of a horned dinosaur. Use these interactives as a pre-activity to your unit on ecosystems or animals or as a way to connect learned information in an exciting and engaging way.

This earth science site virtually engages students in scientific research. Middle school students join "science mentors" to gather data and interpret direct and indirect evidence to propose multiple hypotheses of what life was like in Montana 60-70 million years ago. Created at U.C. Berkeley with support from the National Science Foundation, this is an extremely well-organized site.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a paired or individual activity while learning about archaeology. The site is a little old and clunky, so teachers will need to preview it on the interactive whiteboard to show students how it works. To speed things along, have students write or type their own journal separately, rather than using the one provided by the site. Try a tool like Google Docs, reviewed here, making it easier to share and turn in after the fact.
