Budd:e is an engaging learning experience that offers interactives to play for points, while teaching important cybersecurity and safety behaviors. The site keeps your interest through the building of a personalized robot or cyborg. Cybersecurity and safety topics covered in the package include advice on malware, securing personal information online and tips for safe social networking. Choose from primary or secondary activities based on age range, then begin. A demo is available to try without sign-in; however, registration is required to fully use resources on the site such as saving and resuming previous activities. Teachers will find a vast library of resources such as lesson plans, video explanations of the online activities, and Australian curriculum maps. This site was created in Australia, so American English speakers may notice some slight differences in vocabulary and/or spelling.

Rich Chart Live is an online chart creator that instantly creates Flash charts (and other formats) that can be easily shared. Choose a template from the many options. Begin adding data, style choices, color options, and layout. An animation option is available to apply to the chart's axes and elements and can be customized with speed options. When finished, click Publish. Charts can be opened in a new page, saved to a PowerPoint, or embedded into a blog via copy and paste. You can also "drag and drop" the link to the char onto your desktop (and thus get its url). Opening the link in "free mode" asks for an email address first, but even abc@123.com works.

NetSmartz'''® is an interactive, Internet safety resource that uses 3-D activities to teach how to stay safe. Games, videos, and activities provide information using three characters - Clickie, Nettie, and Webster. This site has more than just your typical topics, such as: Inbox Defender Don't Open That File: A Computer Virus Game, The Password Rap, and much more. Router's Birthday Surprise is a new addition to the site and it includes a teacher's guide for classroom use along with an ongoing activity that can be saved and revisited at a later time. Although this site states that it is designed for ages 5-17, our editors found most of the activities were designed for elementary and middle school ages.

Grovo offers thousands of video lessons covering Internet products you love or didn't know about. There are dozens of topics ranging from email etiquette to using popular Internet sites (such as Evernote, Twitter, or Dropbox). Each lesson is divided into short subtopics and is under 2 minutes long. Included with each lesson (video) is a short quiz, key takeaways, and a glossary. Email registration (free) is required to access the tutorials and features of the site. Some of the tutorials are "premium" (paid) content.

Use this visual bookmarking program to help you keep your online favorites/bookmarks organized. Choose to make shortcuts (tiles with the logo of the site you are bookmarking) for places you visit repeatedly. The tiles make it visual and so easy to use! Can't find the logo? Submit a site by clicking on a button at the bottom of the home page. Access and add to your Skloog bookmarks from anywhere using any computer, your mobile phone, or email. Make Skloog one of the tools on your browser's tool bar in order to add to your favorites quickly and easily. Add or change the preset category tabs that show at the top. Search your favorites by tags, URL, or website name. An added feature is the Skloog tab in the upper right corner of the menu on your short cut page. Click to find some of Skloog's favorite sites.

This resource is best used as a teacher sharing tool for sharing links, RSS feeds, and other resources for students to use on specific projects or as general course links. Use this site to share with other professionals, team members, or parents. Use the categories to save bookmarks for different units you have in your classroom. Make your Skloog page the homepage for your computer, too.

Consider having a category for student use for webquests, tools you want them to use, and creative commons images, music, etc. Also, create a category where students update with suggestions from class members. Use different colored alphabet tiles on a Skloog for younger, non-reader students. For example, give each subject its own distinctive color. They will also recognize logos well before they read!

Ready to think big? How about an interactive timeline that covers all of time from the Big Bang to today? Chronozoom is an ambitious project, just launched (at the time of this review), that seeks to create zoomable, interactive timelines for the entire history of time. At present, the site is still under construction, but it is visually stunning and a little overwhelming. You will need to set aside some time to watch the video tour and to tinker with the site before presenting it to students. Every move of the mouse, every click, seems to create "explosions" of graphs and timelines; you'll need to be patient and get the hang of navigation.

The site's creators freely admit that they don't really know where the project will lead, and what technologies might emerge that will help them create more content for the site. There are some caveats for using the site. First, the site assumes a particular theory of the creation of the universe, and the timeline of its existence. Second, the site can lend itself to aimless "mousing," or the temptation to simply click and move the mouse to see how the site will react, with no attention to the content at all.

tag(s): charts and graphs (129), evolution (89), timelines (35)

In the Classroom

This is a big idea, still in its early stages. Obviously it has usefulness as a way of visually demonstrating the sheer immensity of time, and the relative insignificance of human existence in comparison. You could use this site as an intro to any history or geology class simply to generate BIG questions that students want to know. Consider asking gifted students, or students interested in technology applications to imagine what the site COULD be. How would they create a visual overview of--forever? How can one prioritize what matters? But on an interactive whiteboard--WOW! If you, as current students seem to be, are comfortable with imagining the world as a series of hyperlinks rather than a linear march, this site has limitless potential.

Pora Ora is a stunning educational virtual world for elementary school aged students. The site includes educational activities and interactives for language arts, math, geography and many other subjects. Don't miss the Globetrotter geography activity - taking you around the world! As students participate in activities on the site, difficulty levels increase upon completion of skills. Online safety is at the heart of this site. The parental administration account sets the student's account from free chat with everyone to completely locked down where they have the world to themselves and everything in between. The site has a language filter and you can report any incidents of trouble. The first task requires you to complete an online safety task. You are able to play one time without activating an account. To return to the site an account needs to be created and part of that process is an email activation from a parent (or teacher) account. This site was created in the United Kingdom, so if you speak American English you may notice some slight spelling differences.

Quintura is a search engine designed for early elementary through middle school students. Clicking on the kite icons will give you ready-made search results (not related to the topic you enter). Ready-made topics include history, video games, animals, sports and recreation, and music. This is perfect for ESL/ELL students or non-readers and beginning readers. Enter a search term, and you will see a word cloud that has the related, narrower searches. You can select one or more items in the cloud to see search results. There is a limited number of items in the vocabulary, so not all searches result in success. The kids search does filter out "adult" material. It is based on Yahoo kids content, but displayed in a more visual format. The Quick Tour shows how Quintura for Kids works, but you may have to allow the pop-up to open. There is an App available for the iPad and iPhone.
