Budd:e is an engaging learning experience that offers interactives to play for points, while teaching important cybersecurity and safety behaviors. The site keeps your interest through the building of a personalized robot or cyborg. Cybersecurity and safety topics covered in the package include advice on malware, securing personal information online and tips for safe social networking. Choose from primary or secondary activities based on age range, then begin. A demo is available to try without sign-in; however, registration is required to fully use resources on the site such as saving and resuming previous activities. Teachers will find a vast library of resources such as lesson plans, video explanations of the online activities, and Australian curriculum maps. This site was created in Australia, so American English speakers may notice some slight differences in vocabulary and/or spelling.

Edgar School District has created this collection of embedded YouTube videos without having to go to YouTube to access them. Videos can be found in several ways: via a keyword search bar near the top of the home page for doing a keyword search, via search by categories, or via browsing the latest videos. Clicking on a link will show the video embedded on the site. Some videos include teaching notes and links to other videos in the same category. If your school blocks YouTube you may have problems accessing the videos as they are hosted by YouTube.

Parents that subscribe to a web reader can add an RSS feeder to receive the updates. For information on a specific topic just make sure the www.netfamilynews.org button is checked under the search box before you search otherwise you will be searching the entire web using Google. Monitoring a child's use of technology is a difficult daunting task. NetFamilyNews will help parents make knowledgeable and informed decisions.

Include this site on your class web page for parents as a reference to help them deal with technology issues at home. If you do not have a web-page consider sending a newsletter home. If you are doing an Internet safety lesson with your class, parents can reinforce the lesson at home with information and ideas from NetFamilyNews. Have students make a poster with rules that help them stay safe when using technology such as the Internet and cell phones. Students can take this poster home, share it with parents and add rules for use at home. This amazing site contains thousands of lesson plans and activities for students of all ages (ages 3-16+). Simple registration is required with an email address and password. Choose a grade range to search for activities. Note that terminology for lessons is from the UK, so you may need to "translate" for U.S. curriculum topics and spelling. Choose subjects then further categorized into topics. Many links include complete lessons plans with items such as PowerPoint lessons, videos, quizzes, worksheets, and much more. Other options on the site allows you to save items as favorites, follow other users, save searches, and upload materials. Another offering is the "Whole School" category that includes resources for school needs such as behavior and assemblies.

Build a unique and personal comic strip with Lego characters. First, decide upon the layout of the cartoon strip. Then choose from different backgrounds for each of the frames. Every cartoon series is built using a gallery of characters, and this is where LEGO minifigures come in. Turn the cops and robbers and place them in different positions. Add coffee cups and crowbars, depending on the story. Put in speech bubbles and thought bubbles for adding text. Save finished comic strips on computers or send directly to a printer using links at the top of the activity box.

This is a great storytelling tool that might entice reluctant writers. Allow students to create a comic strip to use as a story starter. Provide Lego characters for students to use in creating a comic strip inspiration. Printed stories make a wonderful bulletin board. The site is very large, and there is much to explore (articles, lesson activities, worksheets, and more). Find grade-level specific links on the left-hand side, from before Pre-School all the way to High School. Search by topic or browse by age, topic, or featured information. Other methods to browse include menus for Just Ask, Activities, Worksheets, Video, and more. Featured topics each month include back to school information, kindergarten readiness, what to expect in various grade levels, bullying, and other topics relevant to school-age children. There is also a free smartphone app. You can also sign up for the weekly newsletter including a new activity each week.

This will be a great addition to your health, guidance, or Internet safety program. Before showing the site, have students take the quiz. The quiz can even be embedded on your website. Afterwards, using your interactive whiteboard (or projector), have students watch the different videos. Using the information found on the site, have students create skits to show proper or improper ways to behave online.

This is a great resource to use with your students. Each chapter can be downloaded separately. Have students read a new chapter each week or month. Have students use the book for research. Learn to be safe on the internet and drug free with this website designed for elementary age students. Visit Operation Safe Surf to see printable documents with internet safety tips, important internet words, and an internet safety contract. There is also a short internet safety video available for viewing. Several games are included such as a general Internet Safety Quiz, safe surf crossword puzzle, and a matching game. The Project Drug Free portion of the site doesn't contain quite as much as the internet safety portion; however, it includes several games to help students learn about the dangers of illegal drugs.

Stories offer great examples of values like courage, determination, honesty, humility, kindness, responsibility, and tolerance. The stories range from incredible kids inspiring other kids, to amazing animals demonstrating admirable qualities, to the invention of inspirational social causes. Stories are searchable in several ways - by values, topics, age range, and format. Formats include articles, podcasts, reference, and videos. You can also sign up for the site's newsletter including updates and new article information.

Use the site as a resource when problems arise in the classroom such as bullying, intolerance, or special needs awareness. CyberWise provides tools for parents, educators, and kids to help them understand and use new media tools safely at home and in the classroom. The site provides an extensive collection of videos and resources that explain current media tools and ways to use them. Videos include guides to Twitter, Prezi, and Glogster as well as media literacy and digital citizenship (at the time of this review.) At this time, there are "coming soon" signs for Facebook, Teacher Tube, Animoto, and others. The CyberCivics blog follows the journey of a classroom in California as they go on their journey to becoming informed digital citizens. The FunWise portion of the site includes links to fun sites for using tech tools, each month a game site is highlighted for its use of technology. Sign up for the free newsletter and subscribe to the blog to stay current with information included on the site.

In the Classroom
Share videos on your interactive whiteboard or projector with students to discuss media tools and how they are using them or before assigning projects using current media tools. If your district blocks YouTube, then this may not be viewable. You could always view that at home and bring it to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as Zamzar (reviewed here) to download the videos from YouTube. Share videos with parents to help them understand current media tools and how to use them. Have your students create an online "scrapbook" on cyber safety using Smilebox (reviewed here).

This site has embedded videos from over 1600 documentaries located all over the internet. These videos are not necessarily "short" clips. Some are longer than 15 minutes. Search the videos via several methods: browse the library, most popular, recent videos, or by categories. The categories vary greatly and include the bullying of those with disabilities, 9/11, aftermath of the Japan Tsunami, import and export of oil, and countless other topics. Each video comes with a short explanation and ratings (out of 10 stars). Viewers can also leave their own rating. Many include suggestions for related videos. Be aware: some of topics may not be suitable for the classroom. Please preview before (or IF) you choose to allow students to peruse on their own. You may want to share only specific videos with the class. It has been noted that this website opens rather slowly at the busy times of the day. But it is WELL worth the wait. Note that videos are recommended for inclusion by the video creators, so there could be very strong bias in documentary presentations. What better way to challenge students to stop and ask, "What is the source of this information and can I trust it fully?"

View videos on your interactive whiteboard or projector to correspond with classroom lessons. Be sure to discuss the source and possible bias of any documentary. "Documentary" does not necessarily mean "trustworthy" or "unbiased"! Link to specific videos on your classroom computer, website, or blog for students to view on their own. Assign different topics and allow students to choose a documentary to use as part of their research. Have students make a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge tools reviewed here.

The movies are clever and engaging, and the quizzes reinforce the content of the movies. "Speak Up" is a straightforward cartoon-creator site meant to teach the importance of character, setting, problem, and solution. The site provides possible characters, settings, and conflicts from which students can choose. Creating cartoons is an effective way to teach students how to write stories with a clear storyline and structure. The story problem section allows students to write in their own scenarios. Students are responsible for creating the solution to the story problem themselves. Each cartoon strip contains six boxes, allows two characters per page, and speaking bubbles as well as narrative box across the bottom of the page.

In the Classroom
Use "Speak Up" as part of a mini-lesson about problem and solution or dialogue. Have students create their own cartoons as part of a craft lesson. Print out the cartoon and students can use it as an outline to help them write narrative text or plays. Demonstrate how to combine narration with dialogue in one text from this cartoon outline.Use scenarios of social conflicts your class may be facing or are currently discussing in character education. For example, use bullying or peer pressure issues. Pair up classmates to re-tell a conflict similar to those students face during recess, in class, or from home. Together they can discuss ways to solve these conflicts. Use the results to open up dialogue about student issues and as a tool to brainstorm constructive ways to solve them.
World language teachers or ESL/ELL teachers can also use this tool for students to practice written dialog and appropriate social interaction.

Woogi World is a virtual networking technology used to teach students about cybersafety and related topics. It is a scalable online virtual educational platform that fosters peer-based, social interactive learning for today's students. The Woogi World site has sections for Kids, Parents, and Educators. Students can play Woogi World by creating their own "Woogi." Before they can create a Woogi, Cyber Hero tells them that they need three things: A Parent Nearby; Parents' Permission; and a Parents' email address. Parents can manage their student's account and read about how Woogi World addresses Learning, Safety, Awards, and Upgrades. Educators can use the Woogi World Cyber Hero program for classroom instruction on Cyber Safety, Cyber Ethics, Cyber Security, and Cyber Health.

In the Classroom
Send home information about the website and ask parents to create an account for their student. If there isn't internet access at home, obtain permission to create an account at school. Another option is to create one account for the classroom and display on the interactive whiteboard (or projector) and perform internet safety activities together as a class.
