Examples of ways to differentiate instruction

TeachersFirst's Thinking Teachers who write our resource reviews often have suggestions that have worked in their classrooms. Open the reviews to the "more" view to see ideas for using specific resources as tools to differentiate for a variety of learners. Alternatively, use the keyword search tool at the left of this page to search for a curriculum topic and the term "differentiate." For example, search fractions differentiate (with "all the words" selected for the search).

Math Champs offers 30 free math activities for ages 5 though 11. Choose an age group from three different levels to begin. Topics begin with simple addition and subtraction, but also include more challenging multiplication and division. Activities provide short instructions to begin play. Turn sound off or on using the button near the top of each game. Choose from most popular games and view high scores. Scores are recorded only after signing up for the site newsletter, but membership is not necessary to play games. This site was created for the UK so American English speakers may find some slightly different spellings.

Looking for a way to add challenges to your middle school math curriculum or gifted classes? Try Figure This, a site of math challenges developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Figure This offers a number of challenges in English and Spanish to be used in a classroom or offered to families for math challenges at home. A PowerPoint is included to help increase parent involvement. Learn why most manholes are round, how fast your heart beats, and numerous other interesting topics. At the time of this review, there were 80 "Challenges" to explore. All of high interest and intriguing topics! Although mainly math activity, many border on science topics as well. Each activity offers hints and answers explained in many ways. Finding the answer is rather tricky! Scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the link to Answer. Don't miss the Teachers Corner. It includes all beginning materials; PowerPoints, forms, and ideas you need to begin!

Peruse this Shakespeare Study Guide to find anything and everything you ever wanted to know about Shakespeare, his works, his craft, the Globe Theater, and more. This site is so impressive that it is recommended as a Shakespeare Resource by The New York Times, the British Library, and the BBC. Of course, you will find all the famous sayings (one fell swoop), quotations, and insults.
This site includes advertising.

In the Classroom

Make this all inclusive site available to your students on your webpage so they can look up words they do not know, etc. There are so many resources available that you could divide your class into groups and have each group research a different play or sonnet. Along with resources for Shakespeare's writing there are resources for Feudalism, Kings and Queens, castles, stage directions and drama terms, and so much more. Consider introducing your heterogeneous class to Shakespeare by using one of the Animated Shakespeare Videos reviewed here. Also, to help differentiate, look at Shmoop's Shakespeare page, reviewed here.

Make the Notes on your PowerPoint presentations into narration using this text-to-speech tool. Upload your presentation, being sure to include the information you want read in the Notes section. (This will be the part spoken by this tool.) Click share to send by email, share a link, or embed the narrated results in a wiki, blog, or site. Also share via Facebook or Twitter. Presentations can be downloaded as a video or saved as a zip file.

tag(s): digital storytelling (60), video (109)

In the Classroom

Use this tool to differentiate instruction for students in your classes. Students can watch the narrated show any time. Students can use this tool to record their own presentation ahead of time and upload to a site for viewing and grading later. Students with speech difficulties (or challenges with English fluency) will appreciate the opportunity to prerecord their presentations without an audience. High school students can also "narrate" a portfolio slide show for Art school applications or a show of accomplishments for college applications. Students can package book reviews or author reports to be shared in the media center. In primary grades, have students "narrate" their portion of a whole-class slide show, then share it with parents and grandparents by URL. They can practice oral reading as they share their story slides. Use for digital storytelling. Have students draw or upload pictures about a story they have written with the words in the Notes area, and have Slidespeech read the story out loud. Create simple narrated slideshows with questions in the notes area for ESL/ELL or speech/language students to practice on their own, such as slides with images of objects and a questions, "Is this a sock or a shoe?" Challenge students to create review aids for each other by writing questions on slides.

Enjoy these engaging and "quick to solve" story problems every day of the year. Topics include content familiar to kids such as Dog Years, The 10 Second Rule, and House of Cards. Following each short story is a question for three different age groups - wee ones (preschool), little kids (k-2), and big kids (3rd grade and up). Sign up to receive problems daily by email or check the website daily for new problems.

Do you have parents who want ideas to help with math (or make it fun) at home? Share this site as an easy way to do math and discuss problem solving at home. Instead of assigning endless worksheets, consider a family bedtime math challenge that parents and kids can do together. Use the problems in a math center - differentiate by choosing different questions from the stories for different student needs. After solving problems, change the numbers in questions to provide additional practice. Display the question of the day as a beginning of class activity or to use as a daily math journal entry.

Mentor Mob collects, organizes, and shares information on any subject. Create collections of subject matter information (called playlists) and share with anyone. This site is easy to follow in creating the playlists. Hint: It is easier to collect the sites and information before creating the playlist, even though you can create the playlist as you find the sites. To view existing playlists, follow the step by step directions found on the left side of the site. Find playlists such as the Solar System with sites arranged in the playlist as you move out from the Sun through the Solar System. As the site grows, more educational playlists will be available. Be sure to play in the sandbox to practice making a playlist before creating your first one.

Use a playlist to share lessons with other teachers or your students. Create differentiated playlists for students to use for web scavenger hunts or other research projects. When researching together in small groups, students can use MentorMob to share different sites they find and want to use in their project or report. This is a great tool for cooperative group work. IN world language classes, have students create playlists of cultural information. In social studies, have groups collect varying sources on current events topics to show differing points of view.

Find links to websites offering practice with TCAP, ACT, SAT, and GED tests. There also links to general subject matter assessments for all grade levels. Although TeachersFirst does not typically review "hotlists," this collection is a well-organized way to find a quick-access review. Each topic includes links to several sites for practicing skills for that test, including several other links sorted by subject for review of content material. For example, under the Social Studies heading you will find grade level links as well as geography and state quizzes. Be aware: at the time of this review, about 95% of the links were working.

Save this site in your favorites on classroom computers and use specific links as a center. These activities provide an introduction to financial concepts and tips to getting on the right financial footing for a secure future. There are four different activities. Each contains interactives by grade level-- up through high school. Even thought the cartoons appear juvenile, the concepts are adapted to be appropriate at each level. Concepts included are debt, making profit, and investing assets. In addition to the games, there is a portion of the site for adults. Here you will find lesson plans for each of the activities by grade level: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12. Lesson plans include handouts, additional activities, questions for the classroom, and learning objectives.

Test any website's readability using The Readability Test Tool. Test readability by URL or direct text input from any source (such as copy/paste of student writing). Simply enter the web address (URL) and get the readability of the site on several scales. You can also check your own webpages by using the "referer" section. You will get a score for the most used readability indicators: Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease and Grade Level, Gunning Fog Score, Coleman Liau Index, and Automated Readability Index (ARI). The tool also includes explanations of each scale. These tell much more than a simple "grade level."

tag(s): independent reading (63), readability (7), writing (295)

In the Classroom

Use this tool to offer differentiated resources for the different reading levels in your class. If you do discover that a website you want to use is over your students' independent reading level, you can still use it, just open Lingro (reviewed here) first; then enter the URL (web address) you want them to read. Lingro is a study aid and open content dictionary that makes all of the words (on a particular website) clickable for definitions and translation. Of course, if the sentence length or complexity is at a much higher reading level, simple word definitions will not make it "readable" for struggling readers.

Why not have students put in the URL for their blog or wiki (or simply paste in a writing sample) to see the level at which they are writing? This is one way to encourage writing as a craft and challenge students to include more varied vocabulary ad sentence structure in their writing.

This site was written to be a series of online, interactive courses for Chemistry, Electronics, and Physics. Although much of the site contains lessons to be purchased, there is still a lot of free material available that would make this a valuable resource for content information. Each lesson contains an introduction, explanation of the topic, questions to correspond with the material presented, a summary of information provided, then follow-up review questions.

In the Classroom

Provide a link on classroom computers or in the computer lab for students to review this material at the end of the unit. Place the link on your wiki, site, or blog for homework help. Differentiate for students by providing this link to students struggling with the topics. Use the site as an example, then challenge students to create their own activities on different concepts for classmates to use for review.

This wiki is a treasure trove of resources for teachers to use when using the Differentiated Instruction model of instruction. The site is most easily navigated by choosing topics from the links on the left side of the page. Topics include background information, planning and managing, and professional development tools. After choosing a topic, there is a list of links: some are to videos, others are to Word or PDF documents that can be downloaded for immediate use. One particularly rich resource on the wiki is the section titled Questioning & Thinking Skills. Located here are many resources such as how to write great questions, a Blooms Taxonomy interactive quiz, podcasts about Blooms Taxonomy, an Essential Questions PowerPoint, and much more. This section is worth a visit just to review the resources. Another well-developed portion of the wiki is the Pre-Assessment link. Here you will find many documents to use for pre-assessment of knowledge as well as activating prior knowledge resources.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector with the sound turned up. Play the introduction to orient your students. Have students try out this site on individual computers, or as a learning center (maybe on the IWB). For students that are having trouble with math vocabulary, use the provided glossary for explanations of common math terms. Parent/teacher information is available for each of the lessons. Most of the activities have different levels so activities can be differentiated for students.
